Pocan Announces Nearly $1 Million in Funding for UW-Madison PFAS Center of Excellence

March 27, 2024

MADISON, WI – Today, U.S. Representative Mark Pocan (WI-02), joined James Lazarcik, Lab Manager for the Water Sciences and Engineering Laboratory to announce $963,000 in federal funding to upgrade analytical equipment that supports research in the University’s new Center of Excellence in PFAS Environmental Science.

"UW-Madison is one of the premier research institutions in the United States and it was an honor to secure these federal funds for them. PFAS chemicals have been detected throughout our water table, contaminating both surface and groundwater systems. This funding will be used to help conduct research to improve the quality of Wisconsin’s drinking water by removing these harmful PFAS chemical compounds from the environment," said Representative Mark Pocan.

“This support will allow researchers to advance actionable research on PFAS that is necessary to safeguard water quality and protect public health,” said Christina Remucal, Director of the Water Science and Engineering Lab at UW-Madison.
