Pocan Statement on the CBO Budget and Economic Outlook

February 4, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan (WI-02), a member of the House Budget Committee, issued the following statement on the budget forecast released by the Congressional Budget Office (CBO):

"Today's report emphasizes the need to put the people of Wisconsin and this country back to work. While we have made progress to spur economic growth, this report finds that unemployment and underemployment still hurt our economy and contribute to our long-term deficit. We need an economy that works for everyone, not just the one percent. That means providing every American with a fair shot to increase their standard of living and purchasing power.

"The fastest and most effective way to reduce our long-term deficit and help millions of families is to put people back to work. Instead of focusing on jobs, House Republicans continue to pursue an agenda that does nothing for Americans struggling to find work. Speaker John Boehner seems content to sit on the sidelines as more than 1.7 million Americans, including 31,000 Wisconsinites, try to cope with the loss of their unemployment insurance. Leaving these Americans out in the cold not only makes it harder for them to find work, but also does unnecessary harm to our economy. I will continue work with my colleagues on balanced, substantive steps we can take to ensure we have a strong economy that works for everyone."
