Pocan Statement on National Small Business Week

May 14, 2014

WASHINGTON, D.C.—U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan (WI-02), a small business owner for more than two decades, today honored small businesses across Wisconsin in celebration of National Small Business Week. National Small Business Week recognizes the immense contributions of the country's small business owners to the economy and culture of America:

"Small businesses are the backbone of Wisconsin's economy, and they are vital to ensuring our nation's long-term growth and job creation," Pocan said. "When we support our small businesses owners, we support our local communities, and our economy. As a small business owner myself, I know firsthand the challenges entrepreneurs face when trying to build and expand their business."

"It is clear our tax code unfairly benefits large corporations through tax loopholes and giveaways unavailable to most small businesses," said Pocan. "We should reward the small business owners of America with the resources and flexibility they need to help their businesses grow. From providing tax incentives for businesses to create jobs here in the United States, to reducing burdensome and confusing paperwork, to ending the sequester that cuts $900 million in critical small business loans, we can take proactive steps to empower our small business owners with the tools and certainty they need to get people back to work."

A lifelong advocate for small businesses, Pocan has co-sponsored the following bills to support small businesses and promote economic growth:

  • Make it in America Manufacturing Act (H.R. 375)
  • Cancel the Sequester Act of 2013 (H.R. 900)
  • Workforce Infrastructure for Skilled Employees (WISE) Investment Act (H.R. 954)
  • Job Skills for America's Students Act (H.R. 1271)
  • Invest in American Jobs Act (H.R. 949)
  • Small Business Tax Equity Act (H.R. 2240)
