Rep. Mark Pocan: High court ruling on Voting Rights Act an 'assault'

June 25, 2013

The U.S. Supreme Court's decision Tuesday to void a key part of the federal Voting Rights Act "is an assault on what should be our most fundamental right as Americans," according to U.S. Rep. Mark Pocan (D-Madison).

Pocan and U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) made the comment in a statement issued after the ruling.

The two congressmen last month announced they would introduce legislation to amend the U.S. Constitution to guarantee the right to vote, saying they wanted to make it more difficult for states to impose rules on voting, such as having to present a photo identification in order to cast a ballot.

(PolitiFact Wisconsin rated as True a claim by Pocan that "nothing in the Constitution explicitly guarantees our right to vote.")
