This Congressman Is Using Magic to Explain Washington
By Nikki Swab
Do you believe in magic?
Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., does. The Midwestern politician moonlit as a magician when he was younger. “In fact, I paid for college doing magic shows, along with the help of Pell grants and student loans,” he said. And now he’s reviving that certain set of skills and using it as an explainer of sorts, launching a “Magic Mondays” video series earlier this week.
“I never would have thought about it at the time, but doing magic was a great preparation for a career in politics,” Pocan said in his inaugural video. “Think about it: misdirection, sleight of hand, deception – heck, that sounds like Speaker Boehner’s 2016 agenda. Just kidding, Mr. Speaker.”
Pocan then used a card trick – swapping out blank cards with marked ones and blue ones for red ones – to make another analogy about Washington.
“See what I mean: Politicians often say one thing, but actually do another,” he mused. “It’s a lot like magic.”
